To celebrate "Algoa FM"s 25th birthday" ECPO and conductor Richard Cock took us on a nostalgic trip down memory
lane to those happy times when composers still knew and dared to write
beautiful and everlasting songs for films and musicals. And let it be said at once,
performers as well as listeners fully enjoyed every bit! It was a great
performance indeed and thanks to Event Hire's excellent sound control our
Philharmonics shone in full glory and in addition to their own contributions,
perfectly supported the afternoon's soloists, each a master of his own.
As usual, former Walmer boy now
highly respected Maestro, Cock once again entertained us all as a perfect
Master of Ceremonies. Naturally, we also added our own "bits and pieces". In
Alford's "Colonel Bogey" we clapped the rhythm and whistled the well known tune,
later we joined in the fun of Flanders and Swann's "Hippopotamus Song" and finally
even danced along in Mercury's "Crazy little thing". For most of the time however
we just enjoyed whatever came our way.
With the famous lines of "What
a wonderful world" Tim Moloi immediately impressed by great musical feeling and
the beauty of his dark, powerful and well-trained voice. Later he was heard
again in Kern's moving "The Way you look tonight", in Warren's "That's Amor
